Much political capital is to be gained through attention-grabbling headlines involving tree planting. It is typical for six or even seven figure sums to be quoted. But tree planting is only a small part of the task. The function of planting a tree is very simple, school children can do it and I have led such ventures. What next then? They’ll typically need some water and the bigger they are, the more likely that will be. If it’s a tree big enough to warrant support, that support will need checking. Given good growth in normal conditions, after two or three growing seasons the support will need removing. The picture shown is a tree that not only is self-supporting, it was being damaged by the structure intended to establish it.
The point of this is, quality beats quantity. Tree planting is more than numbers.
